On this date March 23, 1970 the debut solo self-titled album by Leon Russell was released on Shelter Records. It was produced by Denny Cordell and Russell. This LP followed his debut with the Midnight String Quartet and a production by Russell and Marc Benno billed as the Asylum Choir. The lead song on the album is “A Song For You” is one of Russell’s best-known compositions. It has been performed and recorded by over 200 artists, spanning many musical genres. Elton John h…as called the song an American classic. This album was the beginning of a long solo career for Russell. He had worked for years as a session player in Los Angeles (part of The Wrecking Crew), as well as an arranger, and producer for other artists.
